Zellmann watched over his platoon as they transported jet black bricks from train carriages to Blackbirds. His eagle eyes caught two men chatting to one another while work waited to be done, ‘Mercer, Ruiz what are you doing?’

The pair threw their cigarettes to the ground and stood to attention, ‘Nothing, sir,’ replied Mercer.

‘That’s what I thought, report to Sergeant Michaels I’m sure he has something productive for you both.’

Victor turned his back and walked over to the preacher who witnessed Mercer contorting his face, mimicking his superior in a mocking tone. Victor observed the Father’s reaction and quickly turned about catching the Corporal in the act.

Mercer went as white as a black/grey man could. Ruiz slinked off with head low. Zellmann slowly approached the wayward Corporal.

Leaning into Mercer he spoke in a hushed tone, ‘Dismissed Corporal.’

Mercer saluted and made haste toward Michaels.

‘You could have punished him yet you chose mercy,’ noted Father Barnes.

‘Mercer’s a good man, when the Drax push hard I can rely on him to hold his ground every time. If I start punishing men like that for taking a smoke break I may as well swallow my pistol and pull the trigger.

Anyway, we need to get this revolution started, any suggestions?’

‘There’s a drinking establishment in town it has a somewhat boisterous reputation. I believe it may serve our purpose.’

‘A rough joint?’

‘I caution you, only Davin’s, how can I put it? Most violent men dare frequent it.’

Victor’s eyes stretched across the landing zone to focus on Sergeant Broc Michaels.

‘Do you have someone in mind?’

‘Oh yeh.’

Lieutenant Zellmann marched across the landing zone with Father Barnes, ‘Sergeant Michaels!’

Michaels turned around, ‘Yes Lieutenant.’

‘Why don’t you let me buy you a beer?’

The landing zone stopped dead. Marines gave each other odd looks certain they’d heard wrong.

‘What?’ replied a dazed Michaels.

‘A beer, you do drink beer in Scotland?’

‘Yes sir, but there’s work.’

‘Sergeant Ackerman can handle that.’

Michaels narrowed his eyes in disbelief this had to be a trick.

‘What’s the matter you afraid of a few beers with me and the Padre?’

‘No sir …’

‘Come on, I’m buying,’ Vic gave him a friendly tap on the shoulder as he ushered Michaels off toward the town leaving Bravo One in shock.
